OT: It's snowing in York County, VA

Postby OmnivoreInk » Sat Jan 19, 2008 4:42 pm

It's 7.30 at night and dark outside, but streetlamps are on and there's lots of kids outside making snowmen.

Yes, Virginia, we've had our first snow of winter. Wet, clingy stuff just made for making snowmen.

Of course they'll all have melted by tomorrow.

Hi Barbara,

So I guess the snow plowing business in Virginia isn't very good? :)

'The Holiday'

Postby mphcoach » Mon Jan 21, 2008 4:04 am

I spent last evening watching 'The Holiday' on cable (yea, sad git, I know!).

I've gotta tell you folks, that it NEVER snows in England at Christmas, ever (except that one year around 1968 when I got a bike and couldn't ride it that day!).

Except of course, in the movies (it also happens in Bridget Jones Diary too).

The business of snowfall

Postby Kevin Lee » Mon Jan 21, 2008 11:23 am

Even in Toronto, we’ve only had two heavy snowfalls this year, so global warming must really be kicking in.

Do any of you even bother hiring a snow plowing company to clean your driveway or installing winter tires for your car? For the last 2 years, I haven't even bothered to use my winter tires.

I wonder how ski resorts are doing in terms of business (even with their snow machines)...

Depends on the part of Virginia you're in :) Barbara lives near the coast and I live between two mountain ranges. There's been a decent amount of snow in the western part of the state although we just had our first snow a few days again. Last year we had our first snow around the first of December, so its been less than usual. My grandmother lives about 25 miles west of me, near the VA/WV border and she starts getting snow in October some years :)

I run all season radials on my SUV and have never bothered with snow tires. Too much hoopla to switch them around :) We had a 2' snowfall a couple of years ago and I drove all over the place with no problem, but my dad and my grandfather made sure I learned to drive in snow :)

One of my clients is a landscaper and he does snow removal. Its a nice addition to winter income :) Ice storms are a huge boost to his billing :) Lots of tree work and limb removal and cleanup.

Any UK Snow = Chaos

Postby mphcoach » Mon Jan 21, 2008 2:46 pm

Nice to know that the advisor gets some plaudits too Shri!

If we get so much as a smattering of snow in the UK, everything falls apart (we even get the 'wrong kind of snow', which screws up the rail system for days. In fact in Autumn, we have had the wrong sort of leaves fall, which also causes a catastrophe).

Nothing works, schools close, employees fail to show up and in effect the place is at a standstill. We can't cope because we so rarely have to.

Then it's good to be working from home!

I'm originally from Minnesota, where nothing stopped for snow. Six inches of snow fell during the night? No problem - school delayed two hours, everything else - be there on time!

But here in York County, VA, on the coast, as Shri points out, if we even get a light dusting of snow, everything grinds to a halt! It's hilarious...
