What Do You Enjoy Collecting?

Postby Kevin Lee » Mon Nov 19, 2007 11:49 pm

I believe that some of the best business models are built around people's obsession with things. So I'd like to ask, what do you enjoy collecting?(e.g. DVDs, baseball cards, coins, stamps, books, comics, clothing, shoes, toys, autographs, pets, magazines, etc...). Everyone "collects" something to a certain degree.

And more importantly, how much money do you spend on building your collection?

My collections

Postby OmnivoreInk » Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:25 pm

I do have a few collections - I think you're right - everyone collects something!

One of my favorte charactesr as a kid was Captain Hook from the movie Peter Pan, so I've got quite a few statuettes of that character, along with Smee and the Crocodile, plus a hat and a hook that I picked up from Disneyworld a few years ago.. (I wear them when giving out candy for Halloween...)

I collect theatrical posters, and a few movie posters (all of my wall-to-wall bookcases have "doors" on them, consisting of those posters, since I don't have wall space for 'em!) of my favorite movies.

Money.

Well, besides that... I collect books after books. Garage full of books and still more books.

Then more ebooks.... they get read once and stored away but can't throw away.

Well one of the reasons I brought this topic up is that mall leases can be quite expensive, yet I always see a Games Workshop http://www.games-workshop.com/ at almost every mall I visit. They must have a very devoted customer base, but the funny thing is that these stores are typically empty with just the 2 employees engrossed in a board game.

I used to collect Transformers, GI Joe figures, baseball/basketball/hockey cards, Jim Lee & Image comic books and even Nike runners :D , but now I'm mainly just into books, tennis stuff (e.g. Nike shirts that Roger Federer wore to win Grand Slam Titles) and recipes/culinary tools/bakeware.

My collectibles

Postby BizLoanz4u » Sun Nov 25, 2007 2:36 pm

I collect two things; Marilyn Monroe items and Angels. I have all sorts of statues, pictures, mugs and ornaments in both these fields of interest. Including one 6 foot cardboard figure of Marilyn Monroe in my bedroom!

I have it against the wall behind the bedroom door and she scared the life out of my husband when I first placed it there...(He thought someone was in our room one night) LOL.

Hi BizLoanz4u,

Can I ask how much you spend on your collections on a weekly or monthly basis? And do you ever set a specific spending budget for your hobby?

Furthermore, how much time do your collections take (e.g. time surfing on the web or eBay to buy new items, etc...)?

As for myself, I can tell you that I've spent $481.74 on tennis clothing, gear and accessories in the last 3 months already :D I also spend a little time (approx. 5-30 mins) each day to browse the web for new stuff. It's like I'm addicted to all things tennis, haha!

Collecting stuff

Postby bmueller47 » Mon Nov 26, 2007 2:07 pm

Hi Takuya,

I see that you are collecting books. How long does it take to read a book? When you read it, do you write and mark important passages?

Books is my passion, too. I mark them, write on the back the page number to look it up at a later stage. I have a lot of books on personal
development, goal setting and leadership.

Also I collect magazines, travel brochures etc. It is a challenge to throw
anything away. It is always the thought: "Just in case I will neeit again...."

Somtimes I buy two books so that I can give one away. There is always
somebody who I can bless with a good book.

Finally, I have also books/magazines of spiritual content, which will never be out of fashion. The Bible is my favorite book. The Psalms and the book of Proverbs are incredible to read again and again. Check these two out.

Kindest Regards

Beat

I used to mark specific page numbers in the back of my non fiction books, but when I started doing so much more extensive research. I paper clip the pages that I want to refer to again and I highlight the important content for future reference. I get more comments about all the paper clips in my books. I even take research books to appointments etc and before I leave the house, I will line up a bunch of paper clips across the top of the last page and they are handy to use to mark those important points and info :) This also works great because I prefer not to turn down the corners of pages if I can avoid it :)

Collecting...

Postby bmueller47 » Mon Nov 26, 2007 5:08 pm

Hi Shri,

Thanks for your comment. It is interesting using paperclips. I guess, that there is a limit you can use. It comes to a point, the book can get to thick. Of course it varies the amount of reference you need to make.

Also you can colour code them for different subjects. Have you ever had need of this issue?

Finally, regarding collecting I do have a lot of calendars with sceneries from Switzerland. Many are not protected with a copyright, therefore I can mount them and sell them. Any idea how it can be done?

Kindest Regards

Hi Beat,

It can take me forever to finish reading a non-fiction book (e.g. a business book) because I'm constantly writing key notes and underlining information that stands out with a red pen. In fact, I'll also use a yellow highlighter for the really important stuff, while sometimes even a purple highlighter for things I value above all else. It can take me up to 30 minutes just to read 10 pages sometimes, haha  I find that all these notes and underlining help me to truly understand and remember the business concepts being discussed.

However, with fiction books, I can typically breeze through the pages as I'm only concerned about the events happening in the story.

And rather than throwing away your old magazines, you should consider donating them to your local library as you'll feel better knowing that someone else is deriving knowledge or entertainment from your collection.

You could easily color code with different color paper clips. What I do to avoid the book getting too thick is to put some on the top of the page, some on the side and some at the bottom of the page. That sort of spreads it out :) You could find 3 main topics you want to mark and put those paper clips on the top for one topic, side for one topic and bottom for another :)

I first started using this technique right before I interview Dr Bill Bass of the University of Tennessee Body Farm. I read his book Death's Acre and found a bunch of awesome crime scenarios, so I marked each one with a paper clip. When he autographed my book, he wanted to know what the clips were for and he loved it :) Ahh approval :) He was also very pleased that I found so many things to mark.

The time I spend collecting

Postby BizLoanz4u » Tue Nov 27, 2007 9:05 pm

Hi Kevin,

to address your questions, honestly, I do not spend a lot of time or even money on regular basis. I've been collecting these items for about 8 years now. The way I collect is basically in my spare "I have nothing to do" time and when (or if) I happen to come accross a piece I like, I purchase it.

Some of the items were gift given, like most of the Angels I've collected, while others just fell into my lap such as my 6 ft cardboard figure of Marilyn Monroe that came from my neighbor and best friend down the block from me. She happened upon it in a store and saw they were going to toss it out and she asked if she could have it...they simply gave it to her and she pasased it on.

Other items I do search for when I have the time. I've even come across some pictures that I adore and printed them on my photo printer on photo paper and framed them. You can't tell they were just printed from the computer.

You've never heard of the Body Farm and Dr Bass?? This is one of the websites about his work and his newest books - http://www.jeffersonbass.com/. He's a world renowned forensic anthropologist and an awesome person. This is some additional info http://www.squidoo.com/thebodyfarm/. I was working on my murder mystery with a skeleton that had been buried for 15 years when I met him. We had a very productive conversation :)
