Apparently you need to use special markup language to make your website viewable on a mobile phone. Or your Google ads viewable on a mobile phone.

Check out the details here:

I must say that I'm disturbed by all this mobile phone stuff. People are going to be ruining their eyes trying to read things!

It Won't Catch On...

Postby mphcoach » Tue Sep 18, 2007 2:58 pm

Most new inventions seem to have quotes around how impossible the potential is and the downsides.

Barbara, I think you are right to raise the issue around sight and, you know, no-one (especially the drivers of technological change - kids!), will notice the risks, until maybe it's too late...

Perhaps it's time to invest in optical businesses!

Mobile Internet Viewing

Postby TheAnonymousMan » Wed Oct 10, 2007 11:33 pm

A few years ago (2001 - 2002) there was a lot of talk about creating websites for mobile phones using technology called WAP which I considered to learn but never got around to it.

I don't believe you should even consider creating an optimised website for mobile viewing at the moment unless you are offering ring tone downloads or something for use directly on a mobile phone.

Another exception is if your target market uses mobile internet but again this would only be for ringtone, theme downloads etc because I know most people would not use their mobile phone for book reviews or stories for example.

iPhone

Postby jvprosperity » Thu Oct 11, 2007 10:28 am

I wonder how the iPhone is going to change the way we look at websites on mobile devices.

Well the iPhone allows full webpage browsing in it's original format and it's a big selling feature to people considering it.

Check out the demos at www.apple.com

I hope competitors will soon consider this as well.

Hi jvprosperity,

Competitors are coming in full swing as "Verizon Wireless unveiled three new cell phones...for the holiday season, including a high-end handset named Voyager that will compete with Apple Inc's iPhone.

The Voyager, made by LG Electronics, trumps the iPhone by offering faster wireless Web access. But in a nod to the Apple device, which is only available to AT&T Inc subscribers, it has a large touch screen and full Web browser.

Verizon Wireless hopes the new phone will attract customers put off by the iPhone's lack of a traditional keypad-- the Voyager hinges open to reveal a small computer keypad and a second screen ...

Verizon Wireless would not give exact pricing beyond saying each phone would target a different segment and range from under $100 to about $400. The iPhone costs $399."

Here's a picture of new The Voyager phone

Browsing Websites on iPhones

Postby TheAnonymousMan » Sun Oct 14, 2007 5:07 am

It's interesting to wonder whether your target market will browse your website using this technology but I'd certainly have to research how secure these wireless devices are before I start using them.

I am concerned that personal details and credit card numbers could be intercepted when transmitting them through a wireless device, especially with the initial incarnations of this particular technology.

How much time have these companies spent on security measures? Will we will soon start hearing horror stories of credit card numbers being stolen through wireless transactions?

PDA Security Tips

An article on "Intranet Journal" by Laura Taylor says "With PDAs becoming ubiquitous, the same threats that affect desktop users are starting to affect PDAs. The biggest threats that PDA users need to be concerned typically fall into one of these six categories:

1. Password theft
2. Viruses and data corruption
3. Data theft through line sniffing
4. Theft of the PDA itself
5. Mobile code vulnerabilities
6. Wireless vulnerabilities"
http://www.intranetjournal.com/articles ... 7_03a.html

However, Catherine Roseberry of About.com offers 10 security tips for PDAs:
"1. Physical Security
2. Software Security
3. Removable Storage
4. Data Encryption
5. Software Programs That Restrict Access and/or Locks the PDA
6. PDA Anti Virus and Firewall Programs
7. Wireless Security
8. Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
9. Monitor and Detection Software
10. Use Email Wisely"
