If you have a blog, you could put a link to your fan page. If you are on other social networking sites, you could put a link to your fan page.

Join social media in your business and participate naturally, don't just go and start marketing of your business/products. update your page on daily basis and encourage people to get RSS feed on latest updates of your business/product.

Anne,

There are several ways to increase followers on your business page and as per suggested I too will suggest you to get a blog and try to post informative and interesting posts with catchy titles that will be related to the topics similar to your site's niche, And use author tag in your each post to link it with your Google+ profile. Slowly but soon you will get recognition on the web by search engines and slowly your blogs link will become popular ultimately helping in spreading your business page URL. Apart from blogs, you can also use top article sites and post engaging content with catchy title so that users could recognize your site as relevant one. Use social bookmarking and social media sites as well with all this and try to be updated about your niche market so that you post the latest changes or upcomings in social media sites engaging users to know that.

Remember 10 genuine followers are much better than 100 irrelevant ones!

Be creative as to what pages you're active on and try different sites other than just Facebook and Twitter. We got a good chunk of traffic from posting on Reddit - but be careful (Reddit users can be pretty harsh and they HATE spam!)
Hope this is helpful!

From your post Anne, I would suggest you start with your forum signature, start branding yourself and your site.

Take a look at your profile and give it an upgrade, pictures, bio, interests, etc

When your happy, take all of this to your Facebook and other social media sites.

Cant put my finger on it, at the moment, but there is a good discussion about the effectiveness of social media marketing versus SEO elsewhere in this forum
