I have worked for many companies as a contractor and have realized that most of them have no idea what "team building" is. We have played lazer tag with departments at GM and had picnics with other companies. Not really team building.
One great example of "out side of the box" team building is:
While working at GM for the most amazing manager I have ever had, we were looking for a team building activity. There was the discussion of bowling, lazer tag, go carts, and other non team activities. An administrative assistant suggested that we give back in some way and would bring us some ideas in week. The week passed and at our meeting we decided on working with a non-profit in Pontiac, MI to help them build wheel chair ramps for the less fortunate.
This was a most amazing experience, not only in the building of the ramp, but when that young man rolled up and down it with tears in his eyes...the entire team clapped and cried, as a team. The department functioned at 110% efficiency for the next 5 months.
