Twitter vs Facebook

Postby burnsrunner » Sun Jan 31, 2010 9:04 pm

Networking has been a popular topic.

I use both Twitter and Facebook. I am curious though, to what your thoughts are.
I would also love to read your opinions on which networking platform you use and why?

Here are 2 great articles on Twitter vs Facebook

From my point of view I prefer Twitter. I find it more business oriented :)

Hi burnsrunner,

I would agree with Anelly - I use Facebook for personal uses and Twitter for business.

If we're talking about which one I like more overall then it is definitely Facebook!

If we're talking about which one I use for business more then it is Twitter. Although I still don't think it is very good for that.

I love Twitter! I can contribute in just a few minutes when I get a chance, it's informal and fun *and* informative. I've met some great new friends via Twitter, including joint venture partners and a few clients.

Facebook -- it's just a lot more complicated than Twitter. I had a fan page set up for my business (so I could separate my profile page, which is more for personal use, from my business "chatter"). The first one wasn't keyword optimized, so we did a second one, and that one ended up being in the wrong category! So my info page has empty spots for info like location, hours, etc., that aren't applicable to my virtual business. And you can't change it! V. annoying. That, among other difficulties, has kept me from being enthused about Facebook.

I've also hear mixed feedback about advertising on Facebook. Would love to hear from those who have been successful/unsuccessful with that.

Trent,

This actually one of the few times I'm of the opposite opinion with you.

Facebook to me is a hodgepodge of teeny bobbers and IM wannabes who spam me constantly wanting me to join their groups, programs, etc etc.

I do know of several good applications there that do take advantage of the huge amount of traffic and use it to help others. Causes is my favorite at Facebook and they do raise tremendous amounts of funds for Non Profits as well as increase the supporter counts etc.

Twitter, I'll have to say is nearly worthless if your talking conversion rates from your twits or relationships from most of the other marketers who spam your inbox etc.

What works extremely well for me personally at twitter is my twitterfeed. My blog and rss feed from several of my sites are pinged to twitter. Just as an example a recent comment I made on my sites 2.0 application was picked up at google within an hour and on page 1 first result no less for a pretty competitive keyword linking to the twitter feed.

By the next day the actual page took it's place and has remained there ever since. Twitter has excellent pagerank so twits can rank very well similar to high page rank forums posts.

The difference is the tweets link to your site, assuming your twitting from a feed, and get the SE's attention very quickly.

The SE's will then replace the results from twitter with your actual sites page normally if you have any decent clickthroughs and decent content on the page to begin with.

To me that's a huge difference between facebook and twitter.

Although I won't discount facebook's 100s of millions of members either. Just haven't had the time or inclination to utilize it like I do twitter since pinging my blog feeds is so simple, handsoff etc.

Cheers,
Zac

I know this is a naive question but i'm really not sure:

What do you tweet ? Business? promote your business? Personal? Are there things you can't do?

ALSO :Is there a rule book? Is there a success formula using twitter?

I do a mixture of business tips, personal updates, success quotes, retweets, questions, promoting, etc... It just depends on what's on my mind right then.

I don't think there's anything you can't do. I've seen everything on there. But I suppose there probably are some rules. Spamming is obviously frowned upon.

Hi Trent,

Thank you. How many followers do you have? Do you find the number of followers changes day to day?
Why do people follow you ? (not being a wiseguy just trying to learn)

I have two accounts and both of them have a little over 1500 followers each. The number of followers does change day to day but it's never a significant change. Some days you get more followers and some days you lose some. I don't know why people follow me or stop following me. I assume it's for a number of different reasons.
