Thanks for explaining the history and where the name came from, Yinka. I had never heard of them before until now. Too bad there isn't one in my area as it sounds like something I could benefit from.

One will definitely be in your area, you can visit their website to be sure. They have branches all over the world

Hi, Alan:

As Yinka pointed out, there is sure to be a Toastmasters Club in or near your area. Here is the TM International link; you can search for a local club: http://www.toastmasters.org/

There are plenty of them in Johannesburg as well and all around South Africa and if we have them then Canada is sure to have many more as you are after all a 1st World country.

Canada will surely have more than enough, since it is the next door country to America where it was started

Yes, Canada has countless Toastmasters clubs across the country with new ones starting up every day. Our nearest major city has dozens of them. Our little town where I live only has one — our club. But our town is only about 2,800 people. When our club started about 12 years ago they said it was too small to start a club and that it probably wouldn't last ... but here we are, still going strong!

Just goes to show that you don't have to be big to be successful. If it is still going after 12 years it can grow even more, and for a town with only about 2,800 people that is pretty great.

More importantly have you started planning for the following year? Most people leave planning for the last minute, you should always take time out to reflect, on what you achieved during the past year, and what you wish to achieve for the coming year. Sometimes we cannot achieve all that we set out to do, but your chances are higher if you write them down, and actively work towards achieving them.

Hi Yinka and GT,

Thanks for the information and the website. I'll have to check it out and see how close they are to my area.

Hi Colette,

You are absolutely right. Planning is a major step in reaching your goals.

I haven't yet started to plan for this year due to other commitments, but I do plan to evaluate where I am currently with my business and where I can improve upon. I also plan to make some positive changes and improve my work ethic a bit.

Hello, Yinka:

Presently, our Toastmasters club has 17 paid members. Toastmasters International prefers a club to have a minimum of 20 members (you need 20 members to charter a new club), but in my experience talking to Toastmasters in other cities and towns, it is not uncommon to have low membership. It is often a challenge to bring in new members.

Hi, Colette:
Very good points and great advice. Especially the "writing down" part. We are often very good at "dreaming" but when we write things down, we have to clarify them a bit better and that helps create focus. And accountability.

Turns out there's 5 meeting locations for Toastmasters International in State College alone... only 30 minutes from my town. Most likely due to Penn State University, but surprising nonetheless that I have never heard of the organization before.

I'll have to look more into it as it sounds like something I could benefit from.
