Posted this to my blog yesterday:

Here are six things you can do to promote your site free of charge , or on a small budget.

1. Article marketing: This is one of the best methods for promoting your site. You can write your own articles and submit them manually. Personally, I recommend that you use SubmitYourArticle. They offer a service that allows you to automatically rewrite and post different versions of your articles to each article directory on their list.

2. Forum participation: Sign up to as many forums as possible that are related to your niche and post regularly in them. Don't forget to add a signature link to your website! Be sure to post valuable content.

3. Blogging: Write, ping and bookmark 1 x blog article per day.

4. Comment on blogs: Find blogs that allow comments that link back to your site and comment on the posts. Be sure to post valuable content.

5. Website directories: Register your website on as many directories as possible.

6. Social Bookmarking: Organize a cooperative in which each of you bookmarks each other's blogs, articles and fresh website content.

Yes, I want... Great list, BTW.

Ok, can you expand on how you are using Yahoo Answers, Classified Sites, and Social Bookmarking?
Any links to more info would also help re: additional resources or tutorials.

Hi Russell.

Sorry, I forgot this post while I was away the forum.

1- Social Bookmarking Tools. I recommend to read Authority Black Book first. It is priceless book on Social Networking. You can find everything there from linkbait to video marketing and so on.
Highly Recommended!
(After reading that, we can discuss here details about tools on Social Bookmarking)

2- Yahoo Answers. In Yahoo Answers, you find the questions related with your niche and give them good answers. When you answer you can point the members to your sites or to sites containing your article. Signature can be used there to do this. If people like your answers they will look at your site, certainly.

But, you shouldn't start pointing readers to your sites at the beginning when you join. It can be done after you build authority and experience there. (They ban a lot of members for spamming)

3- Classified Sites. In classifieds sites you add your advertisements to the public and customers interested with your offer buy it. The most famous classified site is http://www.craigslist.org. And they have very strict rules, BTW.

You can do Google Search for "free classified sites" and there will be a lot of links.

I have good success with salespider.com It is both netwroking and clasifieds site and you can post unlimited ads there everyday. People are very responsive there.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for posting that link here. It reminds me that there are many more ways of benefitting from evancarmichael.com than the forum, great resource though it is!

Actually, I called back in on this thread as a result of a Google keyword search which placed it firmly on page 1! This kinda reinforces what I said before about contributing to forums and posting your url link in your signature file. If you choose a handful of the TOP forums and become an active - I mean a USEFUL - participant in them, not only will you build your profile and your backlinks, but you will also be on pages that are ranking highly on Google... just ONE STEP BEYOND being there yourself! :D

Sites don't become leaders in their field because of advanced SEO tactics, hey become leaders because they serve their audience the best.

A great product (i.e a great site) is a very powerful marketing tool and makes all your other marketing efforts a lot more effective.

The most effective Internet Marketing methods I and my clients use is the following:

1. Setup social network media such as on twitter
2. Setup a blog
3. Setup a webpage to display products and service info as well as to process contact inquiries, downloading contract and processing sales
4. "like" and friend social net pages with heavy membership that are market and subject compatible or promote similar products and services
5. Offer personal assistance via email.

Hi members,

This is a great post with excellent responses and whilst there are some techniques that are mentioned all the way thru, there are also many individual preferences and that is exactly as you would expect.

There is no one factor that improves your traffic and sales, it is a combination of all those things but is important to evaluate what is working and what isn’t which is crucial to time management.

Adding value to your site by way of interesting articles or freebies like e-books etc are the hook that will bring people back to your site even if they take no action on the first visit because they will bookmark it for future visits.

I liken this to high street shopping, you have to attract people into your shop in the first place and hopefully they will buy when they come in. If they don’t buy then at least they will have seen enough great offers or items of interest to remember where you are and call back.

Established methods such as SEO, writing articles, website directories, forums, blog posts, classified ads etc are all essential basics but trial and error with the newer methods is essential to keep abreast of the latest techniques.

regards,

Mal

I agree Mal and I think that it is also a good idea to try all the different methods and then find the ones that work best for you. We all have different strengths and weaknesses in different areas and although we need to expand our capabilities it is be to spend the bulk of our time working where we are strongest and if possible and can afford it, to outsource some of the stuff that we are not so good at.

Article marketing can be very effective as it does two things... Gets you direct traffic and builds links for higher search engine rankings. But you need to write high quality articles and set yourself apart from the millions of other people submitting them every day.

This is so true as there is a lot of competition out there and also a lot of junkie articles. The good thing though is that high quality articles are very sustainable and are around for a long long time. I still see some of my articles written two years ago showing up in Google.

I am expert in search engine optimization, but I need to know if there are some other online marketing techniques which are at par with SEO Marketing.

I have never tried using affiliate marketing or any other, but I would surely like to know your thoughts regarding same.

Big Companies have established themselves even before search engine optimization came into picture, and this is the reason why I want to explore some other marketing mediums to promote my business websites.

Any info would be appreciated

Hi Samin, it's John Alexander here,

My top 3 favorite methods of marketing (other than) Search Engine Opimization which is still the top way to gain visibility and loads of free organic search traffic are as follow:

1. Article Marketing
One of the best tips on this is to look for a mentor or writer who already is very successful at writing for the Web. I learned a lot from my partner Robin Nobles which amazed me back in the early days when I noticed that just with one article published in only 3 publications, brought us nearly 1.5 million visitors in just the first 48 hours. Keep in mind that if you are going to write, it's good to build genuine relationships with editors and publishers. For example some publications may include an exclusive (something you write specifically for them) and have it sent out as part of their newsletter. In the example I gave with Robin, 2 of those publications had opt-in readers of over 300,000 each and 1 had over 400,000 subscribers. Of course you have to choose a topic that is right for their readership and it needs to be a little different than everyone else (put a piece of your heart into it.) Another important thing is to build your own distribution channel. Eventually some publishers may even give you assignments once you have a working relationship with them. It is even possible to have your article appear in print, which is very cool if it happens to be an international publication.

2. Social Media
Blogging and Social Media have nearly become like a living breathing entity with huge conversation trails going all over the blogosphere. Make sure to enable comments because with Social Media people have a desire to express their opinions.

3. PR and real world News
This is yet a different style of writing but it comes under the same category as "articles" in that news can be published all over with no concern for duplicate content penalties. Again, you focus need to be either on a newsworthy topic or else real world news going on in your industry. You can generally get huge traffic spikes to your Web site if you do it well. Although the results don't generally last longer than a few days, (because with news, things are constantly changing.) But if you use a service like PRweb, even after the traffic spike dies down, your news content will still show up in general Google searches (sometimes for years.) Plus other media outlets that publish your PR online will usually include a link back to you which can provide some good link reputation and link diversity (depending on who picks up your story.)

4. There is also PPC type alternatives which is not really SEO but paid advertising and you might check out a few alternatives to search engines such as PPC in Facebook or Linked In (usually good for business minded people) or even other services like Adbrite.com which can publish your ads on thousands of Web sites and Blogs targeted to your topic.

I wish you the best of success,
John Alexander

Hi, John:

Thanks for the info and insight in your post. In particular, the suggestions about "news" marketing and the use of PRWeb. This is an aspect of marketing that I think a lot of home business marketers hear about, but may not pursue, not knowing exactly how to approach it.

Thank you GT,

True enough.

One of the ways I try to encourage readers is to pay particular attention to the aspects that they find to be "fun" to them. Whether it's writing news content or articles or sales copy or even just doing keyword research (which is my own personal favorite,) but whatever it is....whatever someone enjoys doing, is often their niche of talent coming to surface.

If they follow that leading, they can outshine and excel any other competitor (who may only be trying to copy what others do.) We try to encourage folks to tap into that hidden latent potential and often, it becomes their strength and forte because when we enjoy our work so much....(it does not feel like work.

It is enjoyment for the author and they'll never dry up or run short of ideas for content.
Best wishes,
John Alexander
