The easiest way to utilize SEO effectively is to forget everything you know about SEO, and just focus on producing good content. Search engines want to rank good content #1 and search engine users want to read good content; so just give them what they want and you will be successful.

Five Easy Steps (the free way):

1. Determine a good subject; geared toward your target audience
2. Write multiple articles about that subject
3. Check Google's Keyword Tool to estimate traffic; sort by 'exact match' to get accurate results. Don't worry about keyword density, just make sure the keyword is in the title of the article. Insert 3 links using targeted anchor text within the article linking back to three separate pages on your website.
4. Publish the content to your website
5. Build links to that specific web page. The anchor text should be either (1) the title of the article or (2) specific keywords you want that piece of content to rank for?

To me, anchor texts, in my own words, are texts that is 'clickable' or acts as a hyperlink. It may be a part of an article, one word that is colored blue and underlined that makes it visible apart from the other texts in a body of an article. Usually, it is important to those who writes articles, drives traffic and the likes.

This is a great topic and useful to anyone who runs a business on the internet. Carol as always your advice is excellent. As far as I know, it is important to use your main keywords as anchor text which lead back to your website or blog, because that is ultimately where you want your readers to go.

Quite the contrary. Unless you don't have the time and need to outsource, ranking your site high in the search engines is not a difficult task if you spend some time educating yourself on what needs done. Besides, paying an SEO company to do it for you still doesn't guarantee a top 10 listing.

It will only help if those websites are linking back to you, and then that's still not very affective. It's much better to generate one-way backlinks to your site. Building quality backlinks is the name of the game.

No, backlinks are links pointing to your site from another site. It's called link exchanging when you exchange links with another site, meaning you both agree to link to each other. If you're one-way linking to people, meaning you're getting your link on their site back to yours, but you're not linking to that same site, then yes, that's a good thing. That would be building one-way backlinks to your site, and you want to get as many as possible. Remember, though, it's quality, not quantity that counts.

I'm with Alan on this one Mary, article marketing, social bookmarking and blog commenting are great ways to achieve one way backlinks. So is forum posting, submitting your blog to blog catalogues and making good use of RSS feeds.

Remember to include good quality content and start building a name for yourself and you'll be well on your way to generating loads of backlinks.
