Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category?

Postby Kevin Lee » Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:45 pm

Hi Everyone,

2009 is a new year and I'd like to create a new forum category to jazz things up! In the past, there's been some interest voiced about adding a "Social Media Marketing", "Online Marketing", "Internet Marketing" or "Online Promotion" category.

I'll implement ONE of those new categories, but can someone first tell me what the difference would be between the existing "Marketing" section and one of those new options mentioned above?

Thanks
Kevin Lee

Hi, Kevin:

That's exciting! A new category in the forum!

This is just my opinion, but I consider the prospective categories, Online Marketing, Internet Marketing and Online Promotion, as being pretty much one and the same - just different words that different people use.

Lumping those three together, I then see that single category as simply a sub-category of the existing Marketing category.

And I see "Social Media Marketing" as a sub-category of (Internet Marketing).

The benefit in creating an Internet Marketing category is that it creates a sharper focus on online methods of marketing and promotion, whereas the existing Marketing category offers a general view that can relate to any and all forms of business and marketing, online or off.

However, I think I see your point about there being minimal distinction between the existing Marketing category and a proposed Internet Marketing category. Our forum membership and participation may not currently be at a level where a separation would be necessary or beneficial.

So, thinking along those lines, I will cast my vote for the Social Media Marketing option. My reasons (beyond those just mentioned) are two-fold:

First, Social Media Marketing has taken a big upswing in recent years, but it is still an area that many marketers are still struggling to understand and employ effectively. I think it would be valuable to highlight this marketing focus with its own independent category listing so that it receives more attention when casual viewers are browsing the main forum index page looking for something interesting to look into.

Second, Social Media Marketing is an area that I am still struggling to understand and employ effectively ... so I wouldn't mind seeing it get additional focused attention and participation from other marketers with insight and experience that can be beneficial to us all.

Hey, Kevin:

Have you received any input on this from other members, perhaps outside of this topic thread? Everybody must be busy taking care of business and may not have noticed this thread before it dropped off the "10 Recent Posts" list.

I've been noticing a few Internet Marketing questions and comments throughout the other threads, so I think if we had either an Internet Marketing category or the Social Media category, it might become popular.

Here's hoping a few other regular members will add their two-bits here, too.

I would like to see a new category related so social media marketing. Lately, i saw that many publications are speaking more and more about Twitter and the new apps. This is the new trend and marketers need to know which are the best methods, how to take advantages and what tools to use in order to give a push to their business.

Social Media Marketing Category...

Postby David Hurley » Thu Mar 12, 2009 9:41 am

I agree that a social media marketing category would be useful and added my vote. I would include "bookmarking" sites in the mix as well.

Such a category would be useful for several reasons:

1. Talking about SMM, its purpose and networking strategies and tips.

2. Discussion of the various SMM sites.

3. New about new sites and developments.

4. Helping to build each others SMM networks.

I completely agree! Those are all just "internet marketing" as far as I am concerned.

And I normally would have voted for internet marketing, however I chose social media marketing simply because there are more than enough IM forums out there already.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your feedback thus far, but we'll need more if a new category is going to be created. I believe Evan wanted at least 20 votes "for" the new category.

Moreover, would anyone like to nominate a moderator for that section?

Hi Kevin,
Like GT suggested, I also think you can add Internet Marketing as a sub category in the Marketing section and also a Social marketing as subcategory.

Online marketing/internet marketing/online promotion are the same, and it will be best to use the common term - Internet marketing.

I can't think about someone to moderate a Social Marketing category. We all use it, we all know how to make it work and we all have our own different experience with it.

David Hurley is moderating the Entrepreneur Resources forum (and doing well), but I feel that he has a good sense for Social Media Marketing and Bookmarking, too - David would make a great moderator for the category.

I realize we are still quite a few votes away from the category even being considered, but if we make it that far, perhaps any current moderators or forum members interested in moderating that category could throw their hat into the ring (here or in a Private Message to Kevin), then Evan and Kevin could decide from there?

I second GT and suggest David.
Also, it will be nice to see one more new moderator here.

Thanks GT and Tanny!

Sure, I'd be happy to do it.

I would be even happier to see someone new bring us a fresh perspective on social networking...

That's easy for YOU to say!

A few years ago I purchased a "Learn to speak Japanese" audio program via an online auction. For some reason that I do not have an explanation for I find Japanese culture interesting and thought it would be a neat idea to learn the language. Well, it's still sitting on the shelf and is still on my growing "To-do" list. Maybe someday ...

David, glad to see you would be interested in the Social Networking category, if that opportunity comes up.

Soooo here we go again...

We had some momentum in this thread

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2547&p=15026&hilit=should+evan+social+marketing#p15026

Why not just resurrect this thread? We had 14 votes, which I thought was enough to launch a new category, because let's be honest here - even though there may be hundreds or thousands of registered members here - they come and go... there's only a couple dozen regulars here and they're not all voting or seeing these threads. I doubt if the 20 votes will manifest.

I'll vote for a social marketing category - It's a specialized niche within Internet Marketing and would attract new members.

In answer to your question Kevin -

I'll implement ONE of those new categories, but can someone first tell me what the difference would be between the existing "Marketing" section and one of those new options mentioned above?

The social media category can share strategies and techniques in using Facebook, Myspace, Squidoo, Video, YouTube, Blogging and anything related to this niche topic...

Thanks for the clarification Russell!

Still 15 "yes" votes to go before we can introduce the proposed category. I think the only way we could reach that total is if those who are truly passionate about it could convince others to join this forum and vote.
