Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me?

Postby OmnivoreInk » Tue Feb 17, 2009 1:57 am

I've been writing some short, 300-word articles for this one company. They give me the keywords, which is actually a phrase, and I have to write the article with that phrase, as is, twice in the article.

And more often than not, the phrase is ungrammatical and there is no way to put it in a coherent sentence.

For example, Auction Cars Goverment.

How can you put that phrase into a sentence to make it grammatical in any way, shape or form????

And does it matter, anyway. If those three words are in a sentence, what does it matter if they aren't right next to each other????

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest:

A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party.

The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for.

The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay.

One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this.

Thanks for the responses, but you're not addressing my real question.

How can you put that phrase into a sentence to make it grammatical in any way, shape or form????

And does it matter, anyway. If those three words are in a sentence, what does it matter if they aren't right next to each other????

If you're "optimizing SEO" do you have to have the three keywords one right after the other in a sentence, or can you space them out a bit so you can construct a grammatical sentence?

Hi Barbara,
First thing, I notices typo in your keywords :Auction Cars Goverment should be government.

Although you can rank high for typos it is not advisable.

Use Google keyword tool to find phrase: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

type your chosen keywords and you will receive a long list with keywords ideas, and how much they are being searched on google.

You should put the keywords in a way they make sense. You want the page to be SE friendly but people friendly too, or your readers will leave your site.

you can change "car" to "cars" auction to auctions, etc, use "a" and "the" in the phrase.
The sky is the limit. The longer your phrase is the easy it is to rank high.

My suggestion go with a 4-6 keyword phrase.

It does matter if all three keywords are in one phrase.
Let say I trying to rank for "work at home" (very hard) I want this phrase in the text in this order "work from home" if I write: "Today I stayed at home, tomorrow I am going to work" i did nothing to help my self. The SE can't see the phrase "work at home" an will not rank for it, never, why, because i didn't use it.

Hi,

Ask yourself, "What is the goal of a search engine like Google?"

A search engine's goal is to provide the most related (or best) web page results when someone searches. Do you think people are searching for "Auction Cars Government" or "Government Car Auction."

In fact type those keywords into Google with the quotation marks. You will find that Google gives different results for each keyword phrases. Granted you get many of the web pages ranking the same but there is a difference.

My answer is, use "Government Car Auction" or even "Government Seized Car Auction" because that is what people are searching for. That is how the majority of the indexed pages use. That is what makes sense when you read the phrase.

If you use a good keyword research tool like Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, you'll find a lot of solid profitable keyword phrases that don't make a lot of sense. You should also be able to uncover some phrases that make better sense and still have a decent profitability. By profitability, I mean the keyword phrases have a decent search volume but a low lever of competition.

I always teach that you have to write for real people first and the search engines second. If you try to weave a strange keyword phrase into your article with a fixed keyword density, it will sound strange and that can affect your credibility and trust.

It's also possible that the people paying you to write the articles do not speak English as their first language and are actually not purposely trying to give you those weird phrases.

In your example maybe they actually meant "Government Car Auctions" or something similar. Maybe you should get a clarification before writing the articles.

Hi there.

I see, you are a ghost writer? I used to be too. Usually when they ask you to write an article, they give you keywords that you should use at 6% density or mentioned at least 6-9 times at the article. Having seen your dilemna which actually is since they are providing you with not so coherent keywords, maybe you can approach and tell them that it is impossible for you to create an article with quality content if they are going to continue on with that kind of keywords. Maybe you can ask for alternatives.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

The acronym "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers," a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, images, videos, shopping carts, and other elements that have been optimized for the purpose of search engine exposure.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or Spamdexing, use methods such as link farms, keyword stuffing and article spinning that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices.
