How do you back up your computer?

Postby Evan » Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:49 pm

I've just heard about BackBlaze and am downloading the trial.

The homepage is worth a visit just to see how they creatively use a woman waiting patiently behind a play button for you to go through the online demo.

What do you use to backup?

I don't use anything fancy. I've got several memory keys (or flash keys or whatever they're called these days), and I copy things over to those about once a week.

I don't bother with my applications or operation system...

I am the CEO of Backblaze and new to this community, but noticed you were discussing Backblaze and backup.

We found sophisticated users historically had been doing some type of backups - often burning DVDs or saving files to USB drives. Unfortunately, much like eating healthy and going to the gym, doing backups falls off the list of to do's and does not get done.

This is why we started Backblaze - with the hope that you would never have to ask "How do you do backups?"...because they just happen automatically all the time. I hope we can help many of you protect your personal and business data from being lost.

I too, regularly back up all my data to discs and USB devices,

Backblaze does look like a very good alternative or addition to these options,

Thanks Evan,

Hi budmang
I have checked your site and I discovered it is what every one need to backup their files. Is the $5 monthly an introductory fees or is it gong to change?

It seems people have a lot to say about backing up a computer!

The initial backup is taking quite some time with Backblaze - I've run it for over 24 hours and it's only backed up 10% of my files. Maybe I just have a large hard drive!

I'm assuming, however, that the backup time will take a lot fewer hours after the original backup is complete.

I used to store everything on both computers - email files to myself and open on the other computer. But, about six months ago, I bought an external hard drive and it was a huge help when I recently replaced my laptop hard drive. I go through each weekend and upload all folders that have new info. So far the plan is working :)

I'm one of those ones still trying to get "back-ups" on my list of priorities. I am always open to a quick and easy way to do it, and if we can set it on automatic, all the better.

I'll be watching this thread, Evan, to see how your back-up progresses.

GT,

The great thing about this program is that you don't have do anything - it just automatically backs up and when you edit a file, it backs up the new version again which is a wonderful feature. The reason I didn't back up as frequently before was the work in actually doing it!

Seems like backup has definitely hit a nerve. Evan, thanks for sharing your experience with the Backblaze service.

Regarding the time it takes to backup:
* The initial backup will take a little while (one to two weeks for most users) depending on your Internet upload connection and the amount of data you have. You can click the "How long will my first backup take?" link to find out the estimate for you.
* Future backups will be very quick as Backblaze will only backup new files and the pieces of those that have changed.

Thanks!

Hi ideasuniversity,
The $5 per computer pricing (or $50 per year) for unlimited storage is pricing we intend to have ongoing.
Thanks,
