Search Engine choices and SEO

Postby GT Bulmer » Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:24 pm

Google is the current leader in Search Engines ...

But what about Yahoo! and Bing? It seems to me that they are gradually growing in popularity too. What do you think?

Should online marketers work at optimizing some of their web pages for Yahoo! and Bing in addition to Google?

Are YOU doing this?

Hi GT,

Good point although I must admit that I do all the SEO that I can and hope that they all pick up on this but the results are quite often confusing between search engines.

I may be showing my ignorance here but I have never deliberately done any SEO specifically for individual search engines so I am open to suggestions, :D

regards,

Mal.

Good point, GT. I find Bing very useful for checking how my pages are "really" doing on the search engines - or at least to compare with my results on Google.

When it comes to searching for info though, I use Google most of the time.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

@Mal: Good point about HOW to SEO for each search engine. I will go back to my 'virtual notes' and find an answer for that . . .

. . . But it will be later tonight (it's morning here, right now), because we are getting ready for a family Christmas get-together and I am supposed to be helping my spouse in the kitchen right now!

I always aim for G and sometimes the things I am doing also work for Y and B naturally. However, I have noticed most of the time it doesn't. The ranking factors seem to be very different. I've got G pretty much figured out (as much as that is actually possible) but the other two don't seem to like me.

That's my experience too, except for keywords with very low competition and search volumes...

Interesting. I checked my original source that suggested optimizing some pages for Bing and Yahoo! and the source does not provide any tips or insight on how to do it!

I checked with Bing and a quick review of the optimization recommendations indicates that they are pretty much the same as for Google. Bing does, however, recommend that you register all of your websites with Bing Webmaster Tools. You will receive updates, access to webmaster tools and further access to recommended optimization practices.

I wasn't successful in this attempt to find specifics for Yahoo! SEO. Although, it appears that you can set up an account with Yahoo! and access their webmaster tools, too. The Yahoo! SEO tips that I did find were all very similar to what most of us do for Google SEO.

Now that I am aware of this line of SEO research, I will keep my eyes open for specifics to pass along here. What I DO know is that every search engine keeps their cards close to their chest, and they all like to make algorithm changes regularly, keeping website owners on their toes!

Yes we should optimize our site for Yahoo and Bing as well. I target all Google, Bing and Yahoo for search engine promotions because all of them draw a decent number of visitors for my site.

to my experience if you optimize for Google Bing eventually catches up and Yahoo uses Bing Algorithm so that works as well. It's just Bing and Yahoo are a bit slower of discovering new content and also are more likely to get spammed because Google's web spam team is actively trying to figure out ways to improve search quality.

Agree with Asefati! Though I focus on getting top in Google but as a marketer one must work for all top search engines.
