Hi Thomas,

So what would you recommend? Hiring an SEO expert or simply trying your hand at doing it yourself?

Hi, Thomas:

I appreciate this discussion. Here's another question for you.
How do operators liberate themselves from dependence on search engine traffic?

Hello:

Here's another SEO question for the group:

I've been working on making changes and improvements to my StarrBizz.com website to be more appealing to the Search Engines and more appealing to web visitors.

I have also started adding some new inside pages to my site because I have been told that regular content updates or content additions make the Search Engines happy. My plan is to create new pages with either articles or reviews of products, programs or services that I promote. Also, informative articles relating to Internet Marketing and home business.

A couple online marketers to whom I have mentioned this to recently said they don't worry about adding new pages unless they have something new to add.

Question:

Do you work at adding new content and new pages regularly? Or do you not worry about that?

I like to add fresh content but I am not systematic about it! Having your blog hosted on your site also works - provided you update it!

Talking of product reviews... that is a good idea. What you could do is write an article related to the product you have reviewed on your site, then submit to article to ezinearticles with the link in the sig file pointing to the product review (because affiliate links are not allowed in ezinearticle sig files)...

The product review acts as the "presell" to warm up the prospect on the product (that solves the problem posited in the ezinearticles article)... and you provide the affiliate link to the sales page on your product review page.

I would suggest learning it on your own. The internet is evolving daily but can you guarantee a hired SEO expert is. The more you learn, the more creative ideas you have when optimizing your sites. An SEO expert might specialize in one aspect, where you have a chance to take SEO to the next level when you dig deep within yourself and branch out to all aspects.

But if you do hire someone make sure you get a credible resource on your side.

Hello:

I tend to agree with Matt: if nothing else, at least learn the SEO basics before outsourcing to a "professional" SEO. You will then have a better idea what to expect and a better understanding of how to evaluate your hired SEO's performance.

I personally would never pay someone to SEO my site. It's actually very easy to do yourself, provided you know the basics. The best way is to learn from a credible source who has experience and results to back up their SEO implementation.

There are a couple of good sources that I know of that know the facts when it comes to SEO. If you're interested in knowing who or would like some resources just let me know.

SEO is tough because there are so many unknowns. My golden rule is that you have to think like search engines would... what would they look for when determining which site is placed where...

A lot of SEO in terms of on-page optimization is trial and error. Changing just one word can have a huge impact on your rankings.

In the event a person hired a SEO expert, would you recommend paying per hour or per "job/upgrade"? Personally, I would never trust a SEO expert or graphic designer for that matter to work by the hour (since they could easily exaggerate how long the job actually took to complete).

I agree with Matt on this one, learn as much as you can yourself, there are plenty of resources on the Internet to help you nowadays.

If you were to hire someone though I'd say get a quote for the job and pay by the job, not by the hour, most good SEO experts will charge by the job anyway.

Take care,

Hello:

I agree with paying by the job with a quoted price. We ALL know how a "simple" computer task can easily stretch out to hours - at least, those of us who are SEO students trying to learn how to make "simple" changes to our websites.

A few comments ago, Alan said,

So true.

Also, I have been experimenting with words in the titles of articles, blog posts and forum posts and have been seeing some of my "experiments" quickly go to the first page of search results for the targeted keywords.

Now that I'm "getting the hang" of that and can see measurable results, I will start doing more focused research on popular search phrases and keywords and start experimenting with those.
